Choate notes. "Patents are the basis for most innovation. People will not invest in new technology unless they can
have a long period of exclusive use so that they can get their money back."
Many technologies "go obsolete" while waiting for approval, he tells Aaron in this clip. Meanwhile, many big companies use what's know as "efficient infringement," which is a fancy way of saying they calculate the benefits of stealing someone else's patents vs. the possibility of getting caught, tried in court and being forced to pay damages and penalties, Choate says.

"We are in a tough spot. We are importing about half of the manufactured goods that we need including about 20% of the core
items that we need for our defense. We are not producing enough in this country anymore. We are not even producing enough
bullets for our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. We are basically in a situation where we are no longer a self sufficient
economy. We have gone deeply in debt and we are financing that debt with China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan through their
central banks and they turn around and make political demands on us or they say will not loan you the money.
One of the reasons I wrote this book is to explain how we got into this situation and how we can get out of it."
