"Trump spokeswoman Hope Hicks is right when she says that “our economy has been decimated” because we have refused to enforce trade rules (“Questions Raised Over Trump’s Plan for China Tariffs,” U.S. News, March 25). Donald Trump’s proposed tariffs aren’t the problem. It is mercantilism as practiced by China, which will be reversed only through a very strong response to it. The concept of free trade may be great in the halls of academia, but it is destructive when used in the real world of trade cheaters." |
