B Corporations
... are American Made Hero Organizations.
B Labs of Berwyn, Pennsylvania
B Corporations are the brainchild of founders Jay Coen Gilbert, Bart Houlahan and Andrew Kassoy. It's part of an ambitious
effort designed to use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. And Kassoy knows a thing or two
about the power of business - in his past professional life, he helped manage billions of dollars for computer magnate
Michael Dell.
B Corporations institutionalize values into the fabric of a company, legally requiring directors to at least consider the
impact of their decisions not only on shareholders, but also on employees, suppliers, community and the environment
. For
sustainability to scale, says Gilbert, there need to be "clear standards, not just nice stories."
Once a company is certified as a B Corporation, its board commits to considering environmental and social factors every
time it makes a decision and has to hit specific social and environmental performance targets.
B Corporation = a new type of company.
Jeffrey Hollender 7th Generation AmericanMadeHeroes.com!AmericanMadeHeroes.com!
Jeffrey Hollender is trying to break a pattern by certifying Seventh Generation as a B Corporation, a new type of
for-profit corporate status (think Fair Trade for companies) that legally obligates companies to consider factors other
than just earnings in their decision making. "Corporate law in the U.S. says your job is to maximize return for your
shareholders," explains Jay Coen Gilbert, cofounder of B Lab, the nonprofit that created the B Corporation status.
"So that's what you're legally bound to do. If you don't, you can get sued." Unless, that is, shareholders also have
explicitly endorsed that larger purpose.
B Lab helps firms develop a legal framework to institutionalize ethical practices into the company
bylaws
, such as
providing retirement benefits or health coverage for workers. It also helps B Corporations access “purpose-driven capital
markets” or lenders who want to do good with their money.
If the economic crisis has shown us anything, it's that business needs a soul
. At B Lab, the question becomes how do we help entrepreneurs maintain the soul of their companies over time.
Alexander Hamilton
"Not only the wealth, but the independence and security of a country, appear
to be materially connected with the prosperity of manufacturers. Every nation ... ought to endeavor to possess within
itself all the essentials of a national supply. They comprise the means of subsistence, habitation, clothing and
defense ... The expediency of encouraging manufactures in the United States, which was not long since deemed very
questionable, appears at this time to be pretty generally admitted."

Cotton of the Carolinas .... North Carolina
... proudly uniting as an American Made Hero Collaboration!
Cotton of the Carolinas is a collaboration among farmers and manufacturers, producing conventional cotton T-shirts that
from dirt to shirt are produced solely in the state of North Carolina.
The shirts TS Designs print on are made just for them by their partner and supplier Mortex, located less than 100 miles
away in Middlesex, NC.
The "Cotton of the Carolinas" collaborators Eric Henry (TS Designs), Ronnie Burleson (Cotton farmer), Wes Morgan (Rolling Hills
Gin), Mark Leonard (Hills Spinning Mills), and Brian Merrell (Mortex Apparel) are all hereby recognized as
American MadeHeroes
for their focus on producing a 100% North Carolina manufactured product while also growing 100% American Made jobs!
Founded in 1977, TS Designs began as a small, manual screenprinting operation. After a few short years, TS became a fully
automated manufacturing company, printing shirts for the big brands (Nike, Tommy, Polo, GAP, etc.). After the 1993
implementation of NAFTA, however, TS Designs watched its customers flood to Mexico for its lower labor cost.
Instead of following many of their peers and calling it quits, CEO Tom Sineath and president Eric Henry turned to fellow
business owner and long-time friend Sam Moore for a new direction. Sam introduced to Tom and Eric the triple-bottom-line
business model focused on three equally important bottom lines: People, the Planet, and Profits.
We are committed to utilize the latest technologies & strategies to fiercely support & promote USA based manufacturers
& innovators!
