Gamesa's windmill blade factory in Ebensburg PA
...selected as an   American Made Hero Company!

The Ebensburg PA windmill blade factory employs approximately 300 local workers at a windmill blade factory operated in a community about 90 miles east of Pittsburgh where too many workers have been leaving to find employment in manufacturing. Four years ago, Gamesa opened this 142,000-square-foot plant in Cambria County as part of its entry to both Pennsylvania and the United States.

"It was a smart move on Gamesa's part to come to the U.S., replicating what it learned to do well in Europe, and they are in a very good position," said Gerry Susman, director of Penn State University's Center for the Management of Technological and Organizational Change.

Gamesa's Ebensburg plant is expanding to handle larger blades as the wind-energy industry moves toward larger, more powerful windmills. It is consolidating all blade work from another blade-making plant in Fairless Hills, Bucks County. That plant will concentrate on making nacelles, which house the turbines turned by the wind-driven giant blades to generate electricity. Gamesa's North American headquarters and a sales office are in Philadelphia.

Laid off from a local machine shop in 2000, Troy Galloway has worked the past three years helping build the blades for the modern giant windmills that now dot the landscape of rural western Pennsylvania. The windmills currently provide two percent of Pennsylvania’s power – a percentage that is certain to increase as alternative energy sources play a larger role in meeting the state’s power needs.

Galloway is the former president of United Steelworkers Local 2635, which represents workers at the Ebensburg plant owned by the Spain-based company Gamesa. Gamesa is one of the main wind turbine manufacturers worldwide and Spain’s leader in the manufacture and installation of wind turbines and these Ebensburg employees are now ...
