HARPOON Brewery
... an American Made Hero Company!
Boston, Massachusetts
The Harpoon Brewery was founded on the Boston waterfront in 1986 by three Harvard classmates. The Brewery started with the
three founders and one employee (a brewer) ... today there are about 90 employees. Harpoon Ale was the first beer to be
commercially brewed and bottled in Boston since 1964. In New England, Harpoon's annual beer production is second only to
foreign owned Anheuser-Busch and is greater than any other New England specialty "craft" brewer.
From a few college buddies pursuing their passion for good, quality beer and thus starting to brew their own to now being
the largest specialy beer brewery in New England, we applaud the owners and employees of Harpoon Brewery
for their zeal and entrprenuership which has now added quality manufacturing jobs in the heart of
Boston ... we hereby recognize and welcome them as
American Made Heroes!
Harpoon was an early participant in what would become a major resurgence in local, craft brewing in the U.S. Small breweries
were sprouting up, particularly in the Northwest and in New England, eventually giving the U.S. more breweries than any
other country. The Harpoon Brewery enjoyed this surge in interest, during which time annual production increased nearly
8 times, going from 7,200 barrels to over 55,000. Harpoon was distributed throughout New England and in other northeastern
states. Capacity expansion was possible within the original space at 306 Northern Avenue in Boston, a former ship
construction facility on Boston Harbor.
In 1997, Harpoon installed a state of the art bottling and substantially increased its production capacity.
With a line-up of beers that now included UFO Hefeweizen, Harpoon continued to grow. When the former Catamount Brewery
went up for sale in 2000, Harpoon purchased the brewery in Windsor, VT and began brewing in October of that year.
The tradition of festivals was continued in Vermont, with two annual events held in the fields surrounding the brewery.
Soon, the Visitor Center in Windsor became home to the Harpoon Beer Garden, where visitors could enjoy a pint of fresh
Harpoon and a sandwich after seeing the brewery. The community of Harpoon beer lovers moved into the cyber-age with the
founding of the Friends of Harpoon and Harpoon’s long-standing community service activities were formalized under the
Harpoon Helps title.
Alexander Hamilton
"Not only the wealth, but the independence and security of a country, appear
to be materially connected with the prosperity of manufacturers. Every nation ... ought to endeavor to possess within
itself all the essentials of a national supply. They comprise the means of subsistence, habitation, clothing and
defense ... The expediency of encouraging manufactures in the United States, which was not long since deemed very
questionable, appears at this time to be pretty generally admitted."
