Where is our president?? |
"We're in the middle of an economic war with China," said Milton Magnus, president of Leeds, Alabama-based M&B Hangers, America's last maker of metal coat hangers, who also destroys his old machines, which are designed and built in-house. "The Chinese want what we have and we're just sitting back and giving it to them." |

M & B got its start in Birmingham, Alabama in 1943 when Milton Magnus Sr. and Roy Brekle partnered to recondition used bottle caps to sell back to the
soft-drink industry. During this time, steel hangers were in short supply due to World War II, so the two moved into manufacturing hangers.

M & B Hangers Donates Proceeds from Pink Hangers Campaign (April 2011)
M & B launched the campaign in October 2010 (Breast Cancer Awareness Month) but plans to continue its efforts, since the battle against cancer goes on 12 months a year. M & B's goal is to keep everyone thinking about finding a cure for the disease year-round and not just in one particular month. M & B has been raising funds for the American Cancer Society through sales of a specialized pink hanger (visit www.pinkhangers.com).
"We are proud our industry could make a difference," company president Milton Magnus said. "With the pink hangers, we came up with a program that would cost the individual dry cleaner a very small amount but could make a huge difference in the fight against cancer."

Alexander Hamilton |
"Not only the wealth, but the independence and security of a country, appear
to be materially connected with the prosperity of manufacturers. Every nation ... ought to endeavor to possess within
itself all the essentials of a national supply. They comprise the means of subsistence, habitation, clothing and
defense ... The expediency of encouraging manufactures in the United States, which was not long since deemed very
questionable, appears at this time to be pretty generally admitted."
