A broad range of economists believe that the Chinese yuan may be undervalued by as much as 40%. By artificially undervaluing its currency, China gives its manufacturers unfair price advantages. Washington needs to close the loopholes that allow currency manipulation to run afoul of international trade policies and give our negotiators the tools they need to take a tougher stance.

Congressman Murphy is one of the lead cosponsors for the Trade Enforcement Act. This legislation would ensure enforcement of our trade laws and stop other countries from cheating on trade agreements. The legislation would also work to combat counterfeiting and piracy of American technology and intellectual property, improve import safety, and promote market access for American goods and services.

As Vice Chairman of the Congressional Steel Caucus, Congressman Murphy introduced the American Steel First Act. This legislation would require that federally funded construction projects under the Department of Transportation (DOT), the Department of Defense (DOD) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to use 100 percent American-made steel products. This legislation will protect and create more jobs in Southwestern Pennsylvania.
